3 Best Family Day Trips from Tallinn: Simple Adventures by Train and Ferry
These three are our personal favorites.
1. Aegviidu – A Forest Adventure by Train
Our family of four goes here monthly.
If your family enjoys nature, Aegviidu is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Tallinn. Located less than an hour away by train, this peaceful destination is surrounded by forests, lakes and well-marked walking trails. A nature trail of two kilometers is also trolley friendly. With older kids you can easily walk off the path and make your own discoveries. On the routes you can pick blueberries, wild strawberries and cranberries.
Start your hike by popping into the RMK information point and you get loads of great ideas for the day. It is located right next to the train station and the hiking trails. There is one little lake with cute beach just two km away (accessible by pedestrial road) Also perfect for little bikers. Another great little lake is four km away- Nelijärve.
Highlights for families include:
- Easy hiking trails suitable for children
- Beautiful forest scenery and lakes
- Picnic spots and playgrounds
- A relaxing train journey that children often find exciting
- Grocery store and a cafeteria (check opening hours!)
- RMK (State Forest Managment Center) house offers free museum, picknick area, information point, drinking water etc.
Travel tip: Pack snacks, a picnic blanket and a change of clothes in case little explorers find puddles along the way.
2. Naissaar – An Island Adventure by Ferry
Want your day trip to feel like a mini holiday? Head to Naissaar, an island just off the coast of Tallinn.
The adventure begins with the ferry or a small boat ride, which is often just as exciting for children as the destination itself. Once on the island, families can discover sandy beaches, peaceful forests and fascinating remnants of military history.

Cycling is a popular way to explore, but families with younger children can simply enjoy short walks, beach play and a relaxed picnic.
Not very suitable for strollers.
Children especially enjoy:
- The boat trip across the sea
- Quiet beaches perfect for paddling and sandcastles
- Forest paths full of wildlife
- Plenty of open space to run and play
Travel tip: Bring layers, sunscreen and plenty of water, as island weather can change quickly.
3. Kloogaranna – A Family Beach Day by Train
If sunshine is in the forecast, Kloogaranna is one of the best beach destinations near Tallinn. Even better, it's easy to reach by train, making it ideal for families travelling without a car.
The wide sandy beach has shallow water that is perfect for younger children, while the surrounding pine forest provides welcome shade on hot summer days.
Families can spend hours:
- Building sandcastles
- Swimming in calm, shallow water
- Enjoying a picnic under the trees or buy snacks from the cafeterias
- Great playgrounds in the beach
The relaxed atmosphere makes Kloogaranna an excellent choice for toddlers and preschoolers who simply want space to play.
Travel tip: Arrive in the morning to enjoy the quieter hours and bring beach toys to keep little ones entertained.

Each destination offers something different depending on your family's interests.
- Choose Aegviidu if your children love forests, hiking and wildlife.
